Neither Barnett nor Bush would reveal the size of the Decision Points deal.īush insisted that the memoir would include self-criticism - "absolutely, yes" - but has long seemed more eager for the public to understand situations as they presented themselves to him at the time. "And what's best is for Don Rumsfeld to remain as the secretary of defence."īush sold his book proposal to Crown, part of Random House, by enlisting the services of the fabled Washington lawyer Robert Barnett, who negotiated a $15m advance for Bill Clinton's My Life, and whose client list makes publishers tremble when he calls: it includes Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Bob Woodward, Tony Blair, Queen Noor of Jordan, Laura Bush and Alan Greenspan.Ĭhoosing to avoid a high-profile bidding war - or, perhaps, an embarrassingly unenthusiastic bidding war - Barnett took the book directly to Crown, where it was bought by the executive responsible for publishing the blockbuster Da Vinci Code. "I hear the voices, and I read the front page, and I know the speculation, but I'm the decider, and I decide what is best," he said then. An unpopular Bush incurred mockery in 2006 when he insisted that he was "the decider", and had decided to ignore calls to fire then-defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

There are a few things I will take away from it (the whole immortality thing) but the rest I will forget and it's not a book I would read again. Whilst at times the writing is beautiful, I still find all of his references to sex to be lewd and jarring, I am no prude but his way of talking about sex cheapens it for me and always seems out of place in his novels. I struggled in the beginning to stay interested and almost decided to give up, but I am glad I continued as the story and characters became more interesting as it went on (although it could definitely do with some heavy handed editing of chapters). It had more of a storyline and dare I say it, the almost random musings did seem to actually tie in with the book and become relevant (although they are talked about to DEATH - e.g Beets, Pan, scent ect). I will admit though that I do much prefer this one to Still Life with Woodpecker. Hmm it seems I am never sure quite where to start with Tom Robbins' books. While she loves her playboy father Raymond dearly (and he loves her dearly), she is bored by suitors and the activities that interest them. He just doesn't understand the American legal system, because it's very complicated, and because the lawyers pay a lot of money to figure it out. The homeless man with the gun isn't crazy. As he explores the reality of the situation, he puts this much together: to aim a gun at someone was completely uncalled for, but actually, if the person had refrained from violence, perhaps he could have legitimately sought justice for this. The novel's focus on power versus powerlessness continues, because Brock has to analyze what the homeless man said. It turns out, the homeless man who takes the powerful, wealthy lawyers hostage at gunpoint was actually wrongfully evicted by this firm, and furthermore, the firm knew that it was illegal and they did it anyway because this homeless man was powerless. The Street Lawyeris actually not the main character of the novel-he's the "insane shooter" from the intro sequence, which sets up the dilemmas of the novel quite nicely.
